Maarten PRAK, Prof. Dr.

Maarten Prak was educated at Utrecht University, where he received his PhD in 1985. He is Professor of Social and Economic History and research director of the Department of History and Art History. He is a social historian of the early modern period. Many of his publications have concentrated on the history of the Dutch Republic, but he has also published widely on European social history. Currently, most of his work deals with two themes: guilds and crafts, and citizenship. These two areas of interest overlap where craftsmen are also citizens. His fields of expertise are: collective action, cultural industry, economic and social history, golden age, institutions, pre-industrial period, social movements, urban history.
